Dr. Michael Whittington
I grew up in central Florida where my parents had retired from the US Air Force in 1970 after 20 years of active duty. I attended college and veterinary school for eight years at the University of Florida and after graduation in 1991 moved with my future wife Lili to Eagle River Alaska. I worked for Eagle River Veterinary Hospital from 1991 to 1994 and fell in love with the unique and exciting Alaskan experience. During this time, we determined we would one day settle down and own a practice in this great state. After an exciting drive down the Alaska highway, and a couple years running a house call practice, working in an emergency clinic and filling in for other veterinarians in the Yakima Valley of central Washington State, my wife and I returned to her home in Ecuador in 1997, and I took on the challenge of opening the first modern veterinary practice in this South American country. In the fall of 2001, after the sale of my practice in Ecuador, I returned to the United States and worked for several practices and emergency clinics in my home town of Orlando and started making plans for our eventual return to Alaska. After several summer trips back to Alaska to lay the ground work for a permanent return, I arrived in Alaska in the spring of 2005 with the goal of opening Far Country Animal Hospital to serve the people of the Mat-Su Valley. Sixteen months later, Far Country Animal Hospital opened for business in a brand new 3,600 square foot modern facility in August of 2006. My wife Lili and I are avid hikers, kayakers, cross country skiers and occasional cyclists. We adopted a one year old mixed breed dog named Paika from animal control in 2005 and look forward to many years in Alaska. We love the unhurried life style in the valley and the feeling of small town life and community that is so prevalent in this spectacular place.
Dr. Cynthia Collins:
Cynthia Collins, DVM, is thrilled to be the third doctor to join the Far Country Animal Hospital team! She is excited about our future vision to be the first veterinary hospital in the valley to provide 24 hour emergency care – a tremendous service for our Matanuska-Susitna pets and owners. She aspires to vastly expand FCAH’s diagnostic capabilities through the addition of ultrasound technology. Diagnostic imaging has been a keen interest of hers for years. Recently, she attended the International Veterinary Radiology Conference in British Columbia, Canada, and met many radiologists working worldwide. Before her passion for medicine led her to veterinary school, Dr. Collins worked researching Type II diabetes mellitus for nearly four years. She graduated from the Atlantic Veterinary College, Prince Edward Island, in Canada. Dr. Collins owns an elderly Weimaraner, a spry mixed breed dog, and a crafty little black cat. Dr. Collins has been an Alaskan resident for over 25 years and LOVES the Mat-Su Valley. Her attention to detail and sensitivity towards her patients and clients makes her an essential part of the Far Country Animal Hospital team!
